I have taken photographs of people, places and objects that inspire me for many years. My camera is my sketch book. It enables me to capture a scene or moment I want to record.
Several years ago I studied for a Diploma in Photography to improve my technical ability. But really it's the act of looking that inspires. The excitement of capturing a 'decisive moment', when the light is perfect or something unexpected happens. Or an atmospheric landscape that stops you in your tracks.
Moving to rural Northiam near Rye in East Sussex at the start of the pandemic meant we were surrounded by beautiful countryside - ideal to restore the spirits during lockdown. Great Dixter Garden is on the doorstep and the nearby coastline provides endless inspiration: Rye Bay's salt marshes on the edge of mysterious Romney Marsh; Pett Level beach at low tide when it reveals fossilised tree stumps dating back to the ice age; Hastings Old Town with it's period fishing net huts and miles of golden sand at Camber.
I'm inspired by light and shadows, reflections, hidden landscapes and atmospheric places. Also by the work of artists and photographers that encourage new ways of looking.
